Make Your Online College Experience A Success

Decide that online learning is best

Online learning unfortunately is not for everyone. Considering that there is no face to face interaction with classmates and teachers, you must be a self-motivated and driven person to be a success in the end. Physical classrooms fit some people better, but if you are comfortable with independent learning then an online college might be just good for you.

Keep in mind online does not mean faster

One common misconception is that online learning offers a faster learning experience. Just because you can learn at your own pace does not mean that you will manage to finish the course faster. The course scheduling must be done reasonably so you have enough study time that success calls for. Think more about achieving your learning goals rather than completing the course in the shortest time possible.

Sign up with an accredited school

The last thing you want is to waste your time and money on a college that is not accredited because then it means that your certificates will not be valid. A college that is not registered and accredited will get you nowhere so there is a need to do your homework when choosing the best online college so that your efforts will amount to something in the end. You can use local education departments to get a list of accredited colleges you can join.

Online learning offers you lots of independence and if you are not careful with time you could end up lagging behind. Plan your hours so that you have enough time to listen to lectures, watch helpful videos, schedule study blocks and also create reading time. Make sure your study environment is suitable and that you remain very comfortable when sitting for the studies. Some Universities offer Scholarships as high up to 5 crore for the eligible students.

Difference a College and a University

What is a College?

Usually, a college is a not-so-big institute and doesn’t offer post-graduate degrees. In fact, some colleges may offer some two-year degrees. At the majority of colleges students can earn only bachelor’s degrees. At very few colleges, students can pursue associate degrees. (If you want a deep insight into the difference between the two institutes, you may want to refer to the Federal Student Aid of the US Department of Education.)

What is a University?

A university, on the other hand, offers both graduate and undergraduate study programs. In other words, universities allow students to sign up for graduate programs. With these programs, students can pursue master’s degrees or higher with tons of other students.

As a matter of fact, these institutes may have law or medical schools for students. At some universities, students can avail special programs to earn a graduate as well as an undergraduate degree in a short period of time. Usually, universities offer a lot of programs and classes unlike a college.

Do Colleges Offer Graduate Degrees?

At times, the difference between the two institutes is not clear at all. For instance, some colleges offer graduate degrees in law, business, marine science, education, and creative writing, just to name a few. Why are the institutes that offer these degrees called colleges? Well, the answer is that they are called colleges because of the tradition. Some universities are called colleges and their name can’t be changed because the modification may cause confusion among students.

Choosing the Right Institute

So, after all this explanation, you may be wondering if you should go to a college or university. In simple words, it won’t matter if you sign up with a college or a university since both of the institutes are the same as far as academics is concerned. Based on the needs of students, they can go to either a college or a university. For instance, if you want to go to a school offering different classes and programs, we suggest that you opt for a university. On the other hand, if you want to attend small classes and have a closer relationship with your teachers, you should go to a college.

Moreover, if you want to pursue a bachelor’s degree, the name of the school doesn’t matter. Actually, it is based on your personal preference and you should choose an institute that will meet your expectations.

Optimizing College Experience

As a first-time-in-college student, I didn’t have anyone to tell me how to get involved or which clubs or people could be beneficial to me. So, me meeting others in my class and talking to them about school and extracurricular activities is where it all started for me. A conversation about an assignment could quickly change to someone telling you that they are involved with such-and-such association; this conversation could lead you to attending a meeting and meeting their advisor; their advisor could happen to be a very influential person on campus or in the community and further benefit your college career. Something like this could happen and could lead to job possibilities, or you figuring out the answer to looming question,”What do you want to be when you grow up?”

I do advocate for student involvement on campus, whether it be Greek life, Student Government, an honor society, or a cultural club; join something. But do not simply join something; go in with the intent of taking a leadership position within the organization and ultimately making an impact. This mindset will help you get the most out of every organization you become a part of. So don’t simply be a member of an organization, be on the executive board. You will meet more influential people this way, such as administrators, faculty, staff, and other people who can influence your college experience and ultimately shape your future. Some of my biggest opportunities have come from faculty or professors giving me recommendations or being a reference on a job application, but you don’t meet these people unless you engage in the community around you.

As a senior I look back on my college journey and I see many places I would’ve done better, but I also see the tremendous growth that I have achieved. A majority of my growth came from interacting with those around me. Anyone in college can simply go to class and leave, but you’re cheating yourself out of a meaningful college experience. Optimizing your college experience includes the process of engaging those around you and really making an impact and leaving a legacy. Engaging others, especially your professors and administrators can open doors for you, that you may not even thought a possibility. The idea of involvement is something each student should grasp in order to optimize their college experience.

Like any other product, the employer wants to pay as little as possible for you and your services. The most capable and productive of you will contribute to, fully produce or sell far more value than you cost your employer annually.

While the aristocracy and some of the wealthy may look upon a college/university education as a globally-oriented, social finishing experience for the young adults in their families, the existing and developing bourgeois (middle class) should recognize college as the next step toward their personal success in the market. Broad, non-focused development of diverse cultural experiences, knowledge and related soft skills is of limited market value and cannot be justified in a ROI consideration. The implication is not that we should forego teaching liberal arts. However, much of higher education has drifted so far from marketable to the corporate world that it is almost criminal to suggest to a student that s/he should major in such subjects, much less pay for the “opportunity”.

The higher education industry claims that as a result of their education and training you will be paid by industry. But, as schools focus more on expanding their liberal arts, fine arts, entertainment (including sports) departments and to a lesser degree upon that which supports and drives markets, the more graduates finish college with lesser marketable knowledge and skills. Most colleges are not accountable for producing job-specific, job-accessing graduates from each student enrolled. Some have even reduced career to the equivalents of in-house, electronic job boards. Further compromising the process, industry, as the primary beneficiary of well-educated pools of candidates, are not paying for your training as it did at the onset of the American Industrial Revolution.

If colleges and universities wish to promote very broad course catalogs and higher education experiences, maybe they should be convincing all of industry that they are providing the training/education their prospective employees need. Maybe they should even be exacting payment from corporate America for education/training services rendered, cooperative placement, and to improve the industry-education system relationship relevancy.

But, until such happens, and until U.S. corporations start behaving in a more nationalistic manner, you as a student will need to focus on selling Brand You, finding and acquiring the free or substantially reduced cost, market valuable educations you need and deserve. There are numerous routes to free and very low net cost educations at numerous very good colleges and universities. Get your free, quality education. Your Success Matters!
